Stories from Letters
A portable creative writing exercise based on typographic forms.
︎ The Problem
1. Writers struggle to generate new ideas, develop skills, and overcome writer’s block.
︎ The Goal
1. Create a simple, portable writing tool that helps writers with these problems.
The Proposed Solution
This had two parts. First, a creative writing exercise workbook (left) with image prompts and space to write. Second, an instruction pamphlet (right) that takes the user through the exercise from start to finish.
Image Prompts
Each prompt is made solely from Garamond glyphs—a design choice especially relevant to the potential user.
Workbook Spread
The characters in the top right show the glyphs from which the image is made.
Instruction Book Spread
The black text on the left page gives general writing advice. The green text refers to the right page, where the example writing is. Hand-drawn elements are used to show the editing process.
Printing and Binding
I printed, cut, and bound everything myself. The binding is hand-sewn saddlestitch with matching thread.
Final Project
In the end, I created three workbooks in three colors, each with 10 unique typographic image prompts. Each workbook has its corresponding instruction book.
